The seasonal changes of the nations capital have inspired poets and painters alike.

And it seems our Prime Minster was likewise struck with inspiration this morning when his pre-Federal Budget reverie was broken by an overwhelming sense of appreciation for the citys dramatic foliage.

Parliament has resumed and the trees in the courtyard have changed colour in time for the budget #budgettrees, Mr Turnbull captioned his photograph of a scarlet-coloured deciduous tree.

While its bright leaves are undeniably beautiful, the tweet was derided by those who felt it was off-message for Budget week.

Perhaps our PM had nodded off to sleep last night while reading a few lines of the Clive James poem iJapanese Maple/i: Come autumn and its leaves will turn to flame / What I must do / Is live to see that. / That will end the game.

His pre-Budget tweet comes as Australia gears up for an election campaign that experts predict will be largely waged on social media.

We look forward to discovering what other gems Mr Turnbull has up his sleeve.
